Opposing hitters managed a pitcheresque .147/.206/.231 line against Rogers from June 1 through the end of the season, and that' s not an arbitrarily drawn line. Starting very late in May, Rogers added a slider to a repertoire that had previously leaned heavily on an unimpressive sinker and a good curveball. The slider turned out to be a devastating partner in crime for the hook, such that by the end of the year, he was throwing one of his breaking balls nearly 60 percent of the time without the slightest loss of effectiveness.
